A few years into my career, I became the “tech person” in my family before I fully realized that’s what was happening. It started with Dad.
As a kid, I watched my dad sit at his desk working through his handwritten accounting sheets to manage the family finances. When computers became more common, he moved to spreadsheets.
He had transitioned from electrical engineering into teaching Economics at a local community college. Earlier, he had also taught Introduction to Personal Computers. One of his biggest pet peeves was students asking questions without reading the book first.
When Quicken came along in the early 1990s, I bought it for him for Christmas because I thought it would be simpler than spreadsheets. He opened the box, clearly excited. Then he handed me the manual and told me to read it so he could ask me questions.
Naturally, given his expectations for his students, I gave him the book back and told him to read it first.
Somewhere around then, I became the person others called when they needed something explained clearly. Over time, that role extended beyond family and into my professional life.
I spent more than four decades working in technology, building and improving systems alongside other engineers. Complexity for the sake of complexity was never in my toolbox. I cared more about solving problems clearly and building solutions that were understandable and maintainable.
BLT Learning grows out of that mindset. It is grounded in teaching from experience, reducing unnecessary complexity, and helping people gain confidence by truly understanding what they’re using.

This means drawing from my decades of work to explain what I have actually used, built, and relied on. If necessary, I will include the “why” behind it to support understanding. I am not interested in covering every feature or presenting every possible option. Instead, I focus on what works, what holds up over time, and what someone truly needs to understand.
In technology, it is easy to mistake complexity for expertise. I learned early that maintainable solutions matter more than impressive ones. That same principle applies here. The goal is not to demonstrate how much I know. It is to make sure someone walks away understanding what they are using and why.

- Unnecessary complexity is removed. Just because a feature exists does not mean it must be used. The focus remains on what serves the purpose, not what fills space.
Finally, respect guides the tone. I assume intelligence, not technical background. I do not simplify by talking down, and I do not complicate to appear advanced. The aim is steady, practical growth in understanding.
