Dirty Carpenter on a Donkey

Just a dirty carpenter on a donkey.

Jesus on a donkey entering Jerusalem, the dirty carpenter

That was how the pastor described the scene in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.

He did not look like a king on a war horse, and he certainly was not dressed for power or position. Even the donkey was borrowed.

Just a man most people would have walked right past… if they had seen him anywhere else.

And the more I thought about it, the more it stood out, because that’s not what people were expecting to see.

It’s such a simple description… but it changes how you see it.

What People Expected

So what were the people expecting?

Certainly not a dirty carpenter on a donkey.

Most kings arrive with an entire entourage—the bigger, the better. They make an entrance in full procession, with someone there to announce their arrival.

Power. Presence. Something unmistakable.

And they definitely do not have to borrow a donkey.

Then the Dirty Carpenter Showed Up

But that’s not what showed up.

What showed up was a carpenter. Dusty from the road. Riding into town on a borrowed donkey.

No entourage. No announcement. Nothing that would have looked important at first glance.

Yes, there was a crowd that day when he made his entrance. But by then many people knew who he was.

Until that moment, the Son of God lived in a way most people would have overlooked, moving from place to place, teaching as he went.

The Disconnect

It didn’t match what people thought it should look like… So many of them missed it.

Not because it wasn’t there, but because it didn’t fit their expectations. They were looking for something else, and because of that, they didn’t recognize what was right in front of them.

Have you ever done that?

Things Are Not Always What You Expect

It happens more often than we think.

Things are not always what you expect them to be.

What looks small can turn out to be important. What seems ordinary can end up mattering more than anything else. And sometimes the things we think matter most… don’t.

opportunity to put in the work

And sometimes the things we’re looking for don’t appear the way we thought they would when they finally show up.

Opportunity doesn’t always look like opportunity. Sometimes it looks like hard work, or something you never thought you could do… or even wanted to do.

That day in Jerusalem didn’t look the way people expected.

And because of that, many of them missed what was right in front of them.

Never Underestimate Anyone

And it’s a reminder how easy it is to underestimate someone.

Sometimes it’s the quiet ones.

The girl in high school who never seemed to stand out, and then you find out she was already taking college classes and on her way to becoming a doctor.

Or the person who shows up to visit someone in a nursing home, sits with them, listens, and over time becomes their best friend.

It might be a family member who decides to start a business, and before anyone really notices, it’s already growing.

Or the co-worker people tend to overlook, until the day something goes wrong and they’re the one who quietly steps in and solves the problem.

None of them looked like much at first. But that’s the point.

We tend to measure people by what we can see right away… and miss what’s actually there.

The Power of Humility

And maybe that’s the part we don’t always think about… humility.

Real strength doesn’t always look the way we expect it to.

It doesn’t need to prove anything. It doesn’t announce itself. It’s quiet. Steady. Easy to overlook.

And because of that… we miss it.

That’s what made it so easy to miss that day, because it didn’t look like power.

But it was.

What This Looks Like Today

We still see this today, just in different ways.

In people we overlook, like the co-worker who doesn’t say much until the day something goes wrong and they’re the one who knows exactly what to do.

In opportunities that don’t look the way we expected, or in the thing we almost didn’t try because it didn’t feel like the right fit at first.

And in situations that seem ordinary at first but end up mattering more than we realized.

It’s easy to miss what doesn’t stand out. It’s easy to overlook what doesn’t make an impression right away.

And sometimes, by the time we recognize it… the moment has already passed.

Final Thought

Sometimes what matters most doesn’t arrive the way we expect.

And if we’re not paying attention,
we might walk right past it…

just like the dirty carpenter on a donkey.
