Valentines Day

valentines day shoebox for collecting cards

Valentines Day is a day for celebrating love and romance. For those who are single, that can make it a very challenging day. As someone who has spent a number of them alone, it is not necessarily a day I look forward to. Except for the chocolate part. That is always good!

What happened to the Valentine celebrations we had as kids in school? You know, the ones where everyone had a Valentine mailbox, usually made out of a shoe box, and we had a lot of fun putting cards in them!

Valentines Day Then and Now

So how did Valentines Day get its start? Well, the day began as a feast day observed by Western Christians to remember one or more of the early Christian martyrs with the name of Saint Valentine. In the High Middle Ages, when courtly love was a prevalent custom, the festival began to be linked to romantic love. Valentines Day was not widely celebrated as a day of love and passion until the 14th and 15th centuries.

The custom began to shift over the years. Today, Valentines Day is a significant business occasion, much like many other holidays. Stores promote diamond engagement rings, red roses, and various types of chocolate in the shape of hearts everywhere you turn. Everything seems to be wrapped in shades of red and pink, with hearts covering just about everything.

For someone who is single, it can feel like there are a million neon signals warning them they are alone, as if they didn’t already know this. That is why it is important to remember that Valentines Day does not have to be limited to romantic love. It can also be a day to celebrate your connection to yourself, your family, and your friends.

Create Your own Celebration

do more of what makes you happy

Over the years, I have found ways to celebrate in non traditional ways. For me, that often means remembering the grade school Valentine parties and finding ways to bring a little more fun into the day. I look for opportunities to show love and kindness to those around me by reaching out to friends, family members, and others I regularly cross paths with.

Sometimes I also do something special for myself. That might mean treating myself to a massage, cooking my favorite meal, or simply enjoying some nice chocolate.

I also try to focus on what I have, rather than what I do not. In many ways, being single can be a blessing in disguise, because it offers the freedom to create your own happiness. Just because someone is single does not necessarily mean they are unhappy.

Sometimes I get together with other single friends and spend time together. Other times it means staying in and having a movie night with friends! The important part is to spend time with the people who make you feel happy and loved!

But the absolute best part is that chocolate is half price on Feb 15th!

Valentines Day Gift Ideas with Meaning

Valentines Day does not have to be about grand gestures or expensive traditions. Often, the most meaningful gifts are the ones that quietly express what matters most.

Valentines Day gift Love is patient

Over time, I found myself drawn to creating pieces that reflect that idea. Simple, thoughtfully designed items made from natural wood, engraved with words meant to encourage, remind, or express love in a lasting way. These are not mass-produced gifts meant for a single day. They are keepsakes, designed to be held on to.

This Valentines Day, I am sharing a small collection of handcrafted BLT Designs pieces. Each one is designed, laser engraved, finished, and assembled by hand.

These pieces make thoughtful Valentine gifts for a partner or spouse, a family member, a close friend, or even yourself. Because self-kindness counts too.

Many of the designs are rooted in faith, encouragement, enduring love, and each piece is made in small batches. These are the best messages because they stay with people over time, rather than being exchanged for a single day, and they do not expire on February 15th.
