I know I certainly did! And it was not just the employees that discovered the benefits of working from home. So did the employers. The most obvious being that their employees are happier and more productive. In many case, employees worked longer hours since they did not have the commute time. The list can go on and on.

There are a number of ways to do remote work. For example, you can continue to be an employee and just work from home. Another example is to find a business to build and run from the comfort of your own home. And there are many opportunities out there today!

Internet Jobs and Remote Work – the Basics

You may choose to work for someone else, or decide to venture out on your own. In either case, there are some basic skills and equipment that you will need to start with.

Basic Skills

The most obvious skill for remote work is to have a basic familiarity with computers and connecting to the internet. And this is more that just being able to surf the internet on your phone, because most of the remote work involves working from a laptop or desktop computer. You do not need to have super fast typing skills, but you should know your way around a keyboard enough to function. As long as you are familiar with a keyboard, you will be able to handle basic data entry and/or support positions.

Software

It also helps to be familiar with some of the types of standard software in use. These include things like:

  • Using Email programs
  • Use of standard software, such as a word processor or spreadsheet
  • Storing and retrieving files to your drive

They do not have to be any specific product like Microsoft Word or Excel. The ability to use Google Drive, Google Docs, and Google sheets will be sufficient. If you need to learn more about these, the best part is that the Google programs are free with a free Google account. Additionally, there are plenty of YouTube videos available to help you learn just about anything!

You will need to have a Gmail account, since this is their preferred email for communication. And Gmail is totally free to set up. Any other software a particular program requires, the company will provide for you. So you will not need to purchase it.

Hardware

customer support remote work

Many of these companies have some minimum hardware requirements to start out, and You will have to supply these. And this is a pretty standard set of requirements for almost any online internet remote jobs. First, you need to have a desktop or laptop with at least 2 monitors. A laptop screen counts as one. If you only have one monitor, then you will need to know how to do a split screen on a single monitor. You need A relatively fast internet connection, and it needs to be hardwired. A wireless network is not acceptable. The computer itself needs to be at least 32-bit, however 64-bit is better. Because you will have multiple programs open, a minimum of 8 GB of memory is recommended. Personally, I always get at least 16 GB. Without sufficient hardware resources, the computer will run very slow!

And finally, you must have a phone line. However, it can be a cell phone, landline, or an internet phone.

Remote Work Opportunities

The program that we offer has a number of companies that are looking for customer service support individuals that wish to work from home. These positions are the people who answer the phones when customers call in for support. Also, the type of support a customer needs will vary depending on the nature of the business. So, if you are the type that likes to talk with and help people, then this may be a excellent opportunity for you to work at home. The pay is hourly and depends on both the company and your skillset, just like any other job! The difference is that you will be doing remote work.

How This Opportunity Works

  • This is an hourly 1099 job working for legitimate businesses that I am sure you have heard about. For example, these are companies like: ADT home security, Quicken financial software, Home Depot, Cruise lines, etc.
  • The hourly rate depends on the company, and you are paid every two weeks.
  • Each work “unit” is a 30 minute shift, and you can work multiple units at a time. So, working a 3 hour stretch counts as 6 units. And you can make your own hours, with some in the morning, some in the afternoon. Just do what works best for your schedule.
  • You start with an unpaid orientation. After that, there is a Mandatory Training period, and that is paid time. This can run from 4-6 weeks depending on the company.
  • You do need to sign an agreement for the amount of time you will work. However, the minimum requirement is 50 hours (100 units) in each two week pay period. And this can be split however you wish in the two week. For example, you can work 35 hours in week 1, and 15 hours in week 2 if you wish.
  • As long as you work the minimum hours, you can work as many hours as you want. And it can be either full or part-time. However, if you do not work the minimum hours, your pay rate can be reduced, or you can be terminated.
  • This is a remote work customer service opportunity!
